Another one of the original commercial lodges in BC, it was easy to pick amazing spots in the 80s! Grania Devine, the Queen of the Selkirks, has been reigning over some of the best alpine ski terrain in Canada for many years, and doing so in an efficient, safe and highly enjoyable way. Her daughter Kate is gradually taking over, keeping the amazing family vibe alive. I have not been since the lodge has been upgraded, but I am guessing that might take the lodge to 5 stars for me. Also up high at over 2000m.

Strengths

  • Just on the west side of Glacier National Park, its cold, high and gets tons of snow. And amazing selkirk cold smoke.

  • Huge glaciers, peaks, amazing circuit tours. Some of the best alpine ski touring around. Tag peaks like Justice and then ski a 1000m run down to the valley below the lodge - or do it 3 times for a 10,000 foot day of skiing like the old poster suggests!

  • Tightly run operation. Amazing guides, everything you need in the lodge, including a simple shower system, indoor pee toilets, power and wifi as needed.

Weaknesses

  • There is a decent day worth of tree skiing at the lodge, but to me it gets boring quickly. If you are here in huge storm cycle, the ski options will be limited as the terrain is not as friendly for high hazard, low visibility conditions.

  • I’m not a sauna person, but most lodges have one and people love it…no sauna here.

  • Water is a big chore, its an alpine hut, so no running water. You have to haul buckets of snow and be smart about water use. Not a big deal as the systems are good, but a small inconvenience.

When and why to ski at Selkirk Lodge? January through April. March might be prime, with the longer days, fatter snowpack and still cold. If you can do some of the circuits and ski the huge alpine lines, you will go home happy!

Ben making sure that really is a glacier in the background with map verification. The 1000m run down Justice.
